What if Creativity is your most Reliable Orientation in Uncertain Times?
LIFE ON THE CONSTANT MOVE, MALLORCA, 2019
Throughout 25 years as a designer in the high-paced fashion industry, I’ve increasingly found myself pondering the limitations we place on the innately human state of being creative—by rendering it exclusive to officially labeled roles and exceptional talents.
What if that is restricting a naturally ingrained way of facing life that lives within each of us—an expansive energy akin to curiosity, deeply rooted in our human nature?
These days, I often sense how insistently we strive for airtight solutions—seeking guarantees for every aspect of life, eagerly following any advice but our own, clinging to storylines we hope will deliver a promised outcome.
Do you find yourself struggling to gain orientation in uncertain times?
Do you feel like you’re aimlessly milling about because the anchors that once settled you no longer hold?
Do you grapple with randomness?
Does a lack of linear logic make your life feel “all over the map”? Then again—whose map are you following?
It’s when you’re borrowing other people’s storylines that you begin to sense something is off.
That friction—the queasiness tightening your stomach—may be pointing to the moment you stopped paving your own way.
Listen in.
Being yourself makes you the most qualified expert on what works for you.
What if you’re bulldozing that quietly confident inner knowing with constant input—overriding a pull you can’t rationally explain, yet unmistakably feel vibrating within the ungraspable haze of daily life?
In an effort to soothe the unease of the unknown, it can feel logical to follow the crowd.
What if living fully isn’t about avoiding discomfort, but daring to explore the full chord of your existence—meeting each moment without an agenda?
It’s about allowing yourself to be transformed by what you face. About daring to be changed. About evolving beyond who you were a moment ago by voluntarily rattling your status quo, rather than settling for the temporary comfort of a permanent conclusion.
Stay with it.
Stay a little longer than feels bearable—long enough to understand the weather.
Challenge your amnesiac attention span. Expand your capacity to feel something all the way through.
When you stop anesthetizing what feels daunting, you paradoxically feel more alive—connecting unfiltered rather than ironing out the wrinkles before they leave a mark.
Creative orientation calls you to live at the edge of your comfort zone, rather than cautiously enough to later wonder if you ever truly lived at all.
What if it’s worth the risk?
When you look through the prism of a seemingly clear-cut surface, countless shades reveal themselves. When you follow your rebellious impulse to bend the rules, you begin questioning the conditioned matrix you once accepted at face value.
It’s in this moment you remember how remarkably reversible your perceptions are.
Meeting life through your innate creativity means approaching each moment as an opportunity to explore—yourself and your surroundings. Yanking the line to see what’s on the other end. Allowing ideas to materialize once you agree to become their vessel.
It’s one of life’s ironies that in performing for security, you can forget the point of being here is to be yourself.
You find yourself auditioning for supporting roles in other people’s scripts, neglecting the task of writing your own as you live it.
Remembering who you are is akin to returning home to yourself—an act of reclaiming sovereignty.
It’s allowing yourself the quixotic journey of being yourself in a world that constantly urges conformity along socially normed paths not meant for you.
Creative orientation becomes your way of navigating pressure, remaining fluid where rigidity once felt safer. You begin to see trial and error as a form of processing daily life. You reframe apparent failures as stepping stones toward insights you could never have planned. Apparent impasses reveal themselves as incubation time—allowing ideas to simmer toward their most impactful form.
You are meant to be the author of your own story.
It means tuning into what genuinely resonates with you. Giving yourself space to recalibrate ways of living that no longer work. Reclaiming integrity dulled by conformity. Trusting your inner voice over the constant noise barreling at your senses.
Are you ready to take the reins, or will you choose to soothe discomfort by coasting on autopilot—set by coordinates with no relevance to who you are?
This is you branching away from a life path you never questioned—until you did. Courageously choosing to worry more about losing your potential than your comfort. Unlearning what once felt certain to loosen the equation that kept you in place.
By embracing your innate creativity, you enter a dance with change. You continually shed yesterday’s self like a snake shedding skin.
It’s how your greatest creative act becomes the ongoing shaping of your own life.
It’s how your innate creativity becomes your most powerful tool in uncertain times.
You follow your instinct to connect seemingly unrelated dots. You trust your gut enough to explore the unknown—even when it costs you the familiar, including who you once believed yourself to be. You remember yourself beyond the boxes you agreed to tick, long before you ever questioned their origins.
The North Star you’ve been seeking externally lies within.
Your creative intelligence is your most reliable orientation for navigating an uncertain world.
